Unexpected & Fun Looks to Ring in 2012

After having gone through the whirlwind of holiday parties, you have one more celebratory fashion decision on your calendar:  New Year’s Eve.

We’ve noticed that people tend to pick a trend to go with through the holiday season (the color red, velvet, sequins, etc.), but are hesitant to go in a different direction for New Year’s.  Yet, this is a great time to switch it up.

Here are some fresh trend ideas to help you ring in 2012 with a new look:

Colorblock.  “Colorblocking” combines the use of two or more blocks of color in an ensemble. This could be for a top, bottom, tunic, a dress and even a handbag or shoes. Simply it means – creating an outfit by putting areas or blocks of solid color next to each other. Find a dress or sweater in blue and turquoise or orange and pink. Or create your own colorblock look with a neutral sweater and jewel tone skirt and matching pumps. And. if you’re worried this look won’t work for your body type, consider the following:

  • If you are pear shaped, opt for darker colors on the bottom half.
  • If you are apple shaped avoid horizontal blocks of color around the stomach area, but highlight legs with color blocks created by brightly colored tights.
  • If you are hourglass, a color block around the waist is a great way of highlighting it and drawing attention to you womanly figure

Tangerine.  The color experts at Pantone just announced Tangerine Tango as its 2012 Color of the Year .   Use this “insider” information to announce this trend to friends by arriving to the party – in a great trench, a silky blouse or a pair of patent leather heels – in this juicy bright.

Ellen Tracy One-Shoulder Dress

70’s Inspired.  For a more casual event, think Lauren Hutton, Jerry Hall and (what the heck) “Charlie’s Angels” and choose a jumpsuit. This is a sexy showstopper and, when accessorized tastefully and worn the right way, it is a style coup d’état!  Long or short gauzy shirts or sparkly halter dress and sexy platform sandals will also give you a very sexy 1970’s Studio 54 vibe.  A big pendant necklace and hoop earrings also add some 70’s glam in your outfit.

Vertigo Paris Romper

Lighten up with Lace – The romance of lace is very stylish now and very glamorous… especially with the addition of rhinestones and pearls.  Consider a lace jacket with sexy jeans and heels, a lace skirt with a flirty top or a lacey flutter-sleeve top with black pants.  Lace separates are available in colors from bright to light and neutrals such as black, ivory, taupe and gray.  (NOTE: Too much white lace can appear bride-like if overdone. Use sparingly.)

Whatever your plans – whether a casual gathering of friends or a formal soiree – be sure to choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable attractive and ready for fun.  A New Year of fashion and adventure awaits us all…enjoy!

Annie sez Last Minute Gift Guide

The count down to our gift-giving holidays is winding down,  so to help make your shopping easier, we’ve put together some gift ideas for everyone from the men in your life to your kid’s teachers.

• Sisters – A NEW HANDBAG!  The sisters (and sisters-in-law) in your life always appreciate the gift of style, so what better way to send her into the holidays and 2012 than with a new handbag.  Your sister will feel like a new person with a new handbag.  Here are some ideas:

hype Leather Tote

Clutch bags:  Clutches have been all the rage lately.  They are fun, sexy and precious.  What’s great about the right clutch is that she’ll be able to take it day-into-evening. With the recent trend of sparkly and sequin embellishments worn for daytime, that makes the double-duty utility of an embellished clutch even easier.  And you also can’t go wrong with other options, such as solids in bright colors.

Structured bags:  Ladylike structured bags have been coming on strong and add a Hepburn-like sophistication to any outfit.

Animal prints:  Animal prints (leopard, python, etc.) are really hot right now and can add a big style punch to an otherwise neutral outfit.

Fur embellished bags:  For your fashion-forward siblings, fur accents on handbags are the item to have this season.  Take your sister through the winter with one of this season’s hottest trends.

Female Colleagues:  FUN & STYLISH GLOVES.  Do not overlook the inspiration and fun that comes from a new pair of gloves.  Gloves are likely something your colleague forgets to buy for herself, and that’s why a new pair can be an indulgent and luxurious gift.  To get your wheels spinning, here are some thoughts on options:

  • Long gloves with buttons on the side are modern Victorian and ultra-sexy
  • Gloves with a fun print on the inside such as polka dots or animal print
  • Soft gloves in bright pops of color – blue (royal, cerulean, sky blue, etc.) is very now, as is the color red
  • Embellished gloves (sequins, sparkles, beads) can lift spirits. Or, look for features such as ladylike ruffles and bows
  • Fur embellishments on gloves are very stylish this year – this is a great way to try the fur trend without going into a bigger investment such as a coat or vest

• Mom – A COZY & FASHIONABLE SWEATER.  It’s cold outside and Mom would love a new cashmere sweater!  Or there are a lot of other soft knits that are nice such as delicate wools, cashmere blends, cottons and angora – that all have a wonderful texture.  Brights are in right now (blues, pinks and oranges), or you can go with a sexy neutral such as heather gray or taupe.  We’re seeing a lot of belted items, so a wrap around sweater with a belt is very stylish, and cowl neck sweaters always bring softness and highlight mom’s beautiful face.  Add a new pair of earrings to go with her new sweater and she’ll be beaming!

Best Girlfriends – EVERYONE’S FAVORITE:  JEWELRY.  Jewelry is another favorite accessory to gift – it always fits! Jewelry options this season are wide-open and creative, so here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

  • Different shades of gold (rose gold, pink gold), & mixed metals are currently on trend
  • Stackable or chunky and colorful bangles
  • Statement necklaces – either colorful, chunky or sparkly, or unique and sculptural
  • Festive cocktail rings (she could wear this on New Year’s!)
  • Dangly or colorful earrings
  • Or check our “Bernie’s Case” in your local Annie sez for  some truly unique pieces – both  delicate and bold

Your Children’s Teachers – SCARF or GIFT CERTIFICATE TO THE MOVIES.  If you’re comfortable picking out a fashion item for your child’s teacher, a scarf is a pretty safe bet.  The great thing about a scarf is one can never have too many, and generally you can’t go wrong.  Stick to solids and neutrals (in a lux fabric if within your budget), and avoid any wild prints or flashy sparkles.  If you don’t feel safe with a fashion item, everyone loves to go to the movies – so a great idea is a gift card from a movie website where tickets can be purchased online.  (Or, you can get gift cards from your local cinema.)  Another gift where you can’t go wrong:  gift certificate to the local coffee shop chain, or local bookstore/coffee shop chain.  Or a gift certificate to a local healthy grocery store is nice, too.

Dad & Brothers (and Brothers-In-Law) – Let’s not forget about our favorite guys! Since there can be such a wide variety in tastes, hobbies and interests among brothers and dads, here are some ideas that cover plenty of ground:

  • Cufflinks – There are lots to choose from – and men who wear business shirts in office settings can never have too many
  • DVDs – always a winner – or a gift certificate where they can pick out a movie they’ve been wanting to own
  • Business card carrying case
  • Montblanc or other nice pen
  • Gift Certificate for a favorite activity (such as movies, or golfing)
  • Magazine subscription
  • Kindle
  • Cashmere socks
  • Beer of the Month Club
  • Gourmet dry-aged steaks

Office Secret Santa / Gift Exchange – GIFT CARDS.  You can never go wrong here with a gift certificate to a local restaurant, or the nearby coffee shop chain.  Other gift card ideas include:  local flower shop, iTunes, a nearby spa, drycleaners close to the office, and Amazon.com.

Doorman – GIFT CERTIFICATE TO A LOCAL RESTAURANT.  If your building does not allow cash tips, doormen always appreciate a gift certificate to a nice restaurant in the neighborhood in which they work.  They often eat lunch and dinner in the neighborhood before, during or after work – and they’ve told us this is a gift they always appreciate.

Annie sez guide to professional holiday dressing

While we’re busy buying and wrapping gifts, decorating and baking, we all know that our professional lives don’t go on hold.  Added to the whirlwind of holiday activities are the all-important office parties and “meet the parents” dinners.   If you’ve had even one thought of “what will I wear?”  You are not alone.

Here are some tips for making the transition from workday to office party or dinner on the town easier this season:

Employ the power of a sequined (or sparkly) tank top or shell:  One of the quickest day-to-night Superman-like changes for your office suit is the sequin tank top or shell.  It’s easy to pack in your briefcase or bag. And since the sequin top comes with its own sparkle, there’s no need to fuss with a necklace.  Simply trade your conservative daytime studs for dangly earrings, and you’re ready to go.

Vertigo Embellished Top

• Invest in day-to-night with jewelry & shoes:  A suit, dress and office separates can transform into professional holiday attire with a switch of your shoes and jewelry.  If you were wearing conservative pearls by day, switch to a rhinestone or colorful statement necklace and shoes that increase the glam factor.  There are lots of sparkle-embellished shoes right now. A quick switch to tasteful, party-inspired, jewelry and shoes with an application of red lipstick can keep you looking professional yet holiday-spirited.

Betsey Johnson Sling Back Pumps

• Work the LBD.  The little black dress, LBD as it’s affectionately known, is always a safe bet for professional evening parties. . .as long as it’s not too little.  Invest in a classic cut in a season-less fabric that makes you feel fabulous every time you put it on and it will last a few seasons and attend many events with you.

Taylor LBD

Go jewel tone.  Don’t be afraid of color.  A classic red shift dress with a jacket during the day looks great with kitten heels.  Switch to a pair of black patent heels or very tasteful leopard print pumps and you’ve got a great look for dinner with the boyfriend’s parents or his boss.  And, if red is not for you, find a great skirt or pant in cobalt blue or jade green. Team it with a black turtleneck and a great pair of suede boots (plus “diamond” hoop earrings) for a casual, yet elegant, look.

ELLEN TRACY Cowl-neck Dress

Keep it simple. Holiday dressing is festive by design, so here are a few things to avoid when you’re dressing to impress the next few weeks:

  • Reserve low cut, short or gauzy items for holiday parties with friends.  There’s only so much of your skin your co-workers or your partner’s parents need (or want) to see.
  • Save holiday embellishments like trees and snowmen for casual wear. Though charming, choosing sophisticated holiday attire is what wins kudos at the office party.

The key to all holiday dressing is this:  have fun.  Use this season to sparkle…from the inside out. And don’t forget to wear a smile – a timeless accessory that is always in fashion.
